Republican John Deaton announced his candidacy Tuesday to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate.

Deaton is an attorney based in Swansea, Mass. A Michigan native, he graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1989 and the New England School of Law in 1995. He is also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, an author and a cancer survivor.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to fight for change, and for the people of Massachusetts in the United States Senate,” Deaton said in his campaign announcement.

“Growing up in one of the worst neighborhoods in America, before eventually becoming a U.S. Marine, successful attorney, and father of three wonderful daughters, I am the grateful embodiment of the American Dream – a dream that is becoming unattainable for far too many.”

Deaton is set to challenge Democrat Elizabeth Warren for her seat. Warren was first elected to the Senate in 2012 and is seeking her third term in office.

Warren responded to Deaton's campaign announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter, writing "Apparently, the MAGA Republican machine couldn't find a single Republican to run against me - so they brought in someone from Rhode Island who will have the backing of the GOP and special interest groups."

Deaton lived in Rhode Island for several years, and only moved to Massachusetts a month ago, according to a report by Politico.
