PRINCETON, Mass. - School vacation may start Monday, but Wachusett Mountain is already seeing huge numbers to end the weekend.
What You Need To Know
- Wachusett Mountain was open Sunday and drew large crowds
- The mountain will be open during winter vacation week with different events, including a lego discovery center Monday and Skiing with Princess Elsa on Wednesday
- The snow storm last Tuesday benefitted the mountain by helping resurface the top layers of the trails
- The mountain does use artificial snow when necessary, which is also a major cost for the business
Public relations manager Chris Stimpson said there will be plenty of events to keep the crowds going throughout the week.
"We have a bunch of fun events," Stimpson said. "Princess Elsa will be skiing around on Wednesday, the folks from the lego discovery center on Presidents Day and later this week we'll have the LL Bean BootMobile, so all sorts of fun stuff happening during vacation week."
Stimpson said the mountain benefitted from the snow storm last week.
"It wasn't a crazy big storm like we were expecting. I know it got downgraded, but just that couple of inches really helps resurface that top layer of the trails to make it a nice, sliding surface for skiers and riders."
Having a natural resource can go a long way for a ski resort which, at times, has to create artificial snow.
"It definitely is costly to make snow," Stimpson said. "We have to do it early on to build up our base and then when we start getting those natural storms from mother nature, it just makes a nice refreshing top layer of snow for everybody to enjoy."
Stimpson said skiing and snowboarding is a seasonal event for many families, which makes having a local mountain vital for the community.
"It's just a great local mountain," he said. "You can travel up north, but it's a lot of fun right here in your backyard if you're in Boston or Worcester. We always say mountain skiing just minutes away and here it is."
Stimpson said Wachusett Mountain will be open through the entirety of vacation week.
They'll also have lessons for beginners.
