Chicopee police said a 15-year-old and 16-year-old are currently in custody, one of whom is being charged with possession of a firearm.
"We look at the safety and security of every school including our high schools, middle schools, elementary schools," said Chicopee superintendent Marcus Ware. "And we actually have conversations regularly about how to keep our students safe, how to make sure that we have our utmost secure visitor policy as well. If anything does transpire, how we actually have a conversation about how to make sure we don't have any loopholes, so safety isn't imputed to any of our students or staff members."
Several officers and detectives were dispatched to the scene closing part of Front Street while investigating. Public Information Officer Travis Odiorne said there were no injuries during the incident.
A grandparent of a student said she is concerned about the safety of her grandchildren.
"I just think its a shame that kids that young are able to get guns," said Anne Scibelli. "You're hearing about it everywhere. Parents need to be responsible."
The Chicopee School Department did suspend all after-school activities Tuesday at Chicopee High School and Dupont Middle School.
Odiorne said the two students in custody were not Chicopee High School students, but police are still investigating other people who may have been involved.
"Right now that's still being investigated," Odiorne said. "We did place two parties under arrest - the 15 and 16-year-old parties from Chicopee."
Chicopee police said there are no plans at this time to increase patrol on school grounds because the incident occurred outside the school building.
