WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester City Councilor George Russell wants to change the way the city handles trash collection.
Russell, who is the chair of the City Council’s Public Works Committee, said he’s requesting City Manager Eric Batista provide a report on ways to remove fees and end the requirement for residents to use yellow city trash bags.
Russell said he wants to look at ways other cities handle trash pickup and if a different method could work in Worcester.
“You can’t argue with it,” he said. “The fact of the matter is we have a cleanliness issue in our neighborhoods. And if it’s not doing away with the pickup fee for our trash, then we need to come up with something else because what we’re doing now just isn’t working.”
Russell said he wants to see if trash pickup can be included in city taxes. The issue is on the agenda for Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
