SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Some western Massachusetts residents were taking advantage of the nice weather Thursday by doing some pumpkin picking at McCray's Country Creamery.

What You Need To Know

  • Some western Massachusetts residents were taking advantage of the nice weather Thursday by doing some pumpkin picking at McCray's Country Creamery

  • Hadley resident and nanny Leila Kappenman spent Thursday morning picking pumpkins with baby Austin

  • Chciopee resident Marylyn Woishnis was also at the South Hadley farm with her husband and granddaughter Hazel

  • Both families chose Thursday due to the rainfall last weekend and the expected rainfall this coming weekend

"I usually like to pick the white ones because I just like how they look," said Hadley resident Leila Kappenman. "I usually like to get the smaller ones, I don't know."

"I like the big rounds one with a good stem," said Marylyn Woishnis, of Chicopee. "And after we're done with them, my husband makes soup with them, so multipurpose. I like the round ones the best."

With rainfall last weekend and more expected this weekend, Woishnis said the warm Thursday weather made for a nice time to take her granddaughter Hazel to the South Hadley farm.

"And now that my husbands retired during the week it's less busy," Woishnis said.  "And trying to take her with us, give her something to do, so it's nice during the week it's fewer people. But I'll probably be back over the weekend too. Maybe Sunday when its not raining. We'll see."

Whether it's decorating pumpkins for Halloween or enjoying the cool weather to come, both Kappenman and Woishnis said they're looking forward to enjoying more of the fall season.

"I like fall in general," Woishnis said. "I mean, I like the less scary part of Halloween. But yeah, I love this time of the year in general."

"We're gonna take them home," Kappenman said. "Me and him are actually going to paint them and then I'm going to some home for me and my boyfriend to carve."
