WORCESTER, Mass. - The Assumption football team is 2-0 to start the season and ranked 19th in the country in the American Football Coaches Association poll.
The Greyhounds visit seventh-ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday in what is being called the "Brian Kelly Bowl." Kelly, the current head coach at LSU, played and coached at Assumption and coached Grand Valley State.
The game was originally supposed to be played in 2020 and Assumption was going to stop at Notre Dame, where Kelly was the coach at the time, on their way and practice there, but COVID canceled the game. Instead, the team will be flying to Michigan on a chartered jet for this top-25 match-up.
"It's really an exciting opportunity for us, something that Assumption's never done before," said quarterback Jake Cady. "We're super excited for the opportunity and to go out there and show what we can do."
"I think for a lot of guys, this is the first time traveling on a plane to a game," said linebacker Josh Loureiro. "So we're excited for that, it's going to be a change, but I think we're ready for it and ready for the game."
"It's a great opportunity for us to travel down and knock off a highly ranked team," said linebacker Owen Fitzgerald. "You know, we have to do our job, we have to take it seriously - the whole time, the hotel, the flight and everything, it's just like a regular game."
