HOLYOKE, Mass. - Police are still looking for the suspect who attempted to rob the Furnari Jewelers store inside the Holyoke Mall Friday.

What You Need To Know

  • Last Friday, an individual attempted to rob Furnari Jewelers storev inside of Holyoke Mall

  • Store owner Joey Furnari was able to recover the chain after the attempted robber dropped it after being chased by Furnari himself

  • Police are still looking for the suspect

  • Furnari Jewelers has locations in Chicopee, Holyoke and Enfield, Connecticut

The frightening incident was caught on camera. Owner Joey Furnari was at the store at the time.

"Yeah, it was crazy," Furnari said. "An individual came in around 4:30 p.m. on Friday. First was very friendly, polite, and kept on wanting to see gold chains until he got one of my most expensive ones and then he just took off with it."

Furnari said retail workers are usually encouraged to not pursue potential robbers, but in this situation, he was going to make an exception.

"I was pursuing him because that's a $16,000 gold chain," Furnari said. "I wanted it back, and when I was running and was chasing him I said, 'I'm gonna catch you! I'm gonna catch you! I'm gonna catch you!,' and I think he got scared and he threw the chain down luckily and then that was it. The lady passed me the chain off the ground and I got it back."

Managing a jewelry store which can hold thousands of dollars worth of merchandise can make a business an easy target for theft. Furnari said Friday's incident was not the first time he or his family experienced an attempted robbery.

"My father, we've had quite a few run ins with some bad guys," he said. "My father was in a shootout at the store in Chicopee, Mass., and I had a gun pulled out on me in the Enfield, in our Enfield, Connecticut location. But luckily, the bad guys were all arrested in that situation."

Furnari said he's very grateful for the amount of community support his jewelry business has gotten since the incident over the weekend. He said he has been in contact with Holyoke Police, and hopes the suspect is brought to justice soon.
