- Bliss Park is closed while police investigate acid poured on equipment this past weekend.
- A few residents of Longmeadow received some chemical burns as a result of being in contact with the substance.
- The substance was muriatic acid and it was stolen from the pool house at the park through breaking and entering.
- Police hope to open the park soon but not before a deep cleaning is done.
Longmeadow Police Captain Carl Mazzaferro said police and fire were called to the park on Sunday for reports of a substance on a pool slide. Mazzaferro said a few Longmeadow residents were injured as a result.
"Simultaneously another call came in for a parent at a residential location reporting that their child had some chemical burns and through investigation we found out those children were at the park and came in contact with a, at the time, a unknown substance," he said.
Police said an investigation found the substance was muriatic acid. Mazzaferro said the acid used was stolen from the park.
"Through that investigation we discovered that the pool house was broken into," he said. "And our suspects took that muriatic acid from inside the pool house and poured it onto the slide."
Mazzaferro did not comment on suspects, but said the investigation is still ongoing, with support from state police and the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office.
"Since this incident, Longmeadow Police Department has stepped up patrols at Bliss Park," he said. "The park right now is currently closed and town is in the process of bringing a crew in to do a deep cleaning of the park and the goal is to have this park open sooner than later, really by the end of the week."
Mazzaferro sad the current status of the family injured is unknown, but they were evaluated by the Longmeadow Fire Department and EMS. He asks anyone who may have been burned or who may have information on the suspect to contact police.
