SHREWSBURY, Mass. - Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis hosted his senior picnic Saturday and it was a busy afternoon for him and his team.

The sheriff's office welcomed more than 1,200 senior citizens to the Scandinavian Athletic Club in what has become an annual tradition. Seniors pulled up drive-through style while the sheriff and his team handed out boxed lunches, goodie bags, and some of the luckier ones even took home some big gift baskets.

"As sheriff, I'm blessed to have this annual picnic that has just become bigger and better to the point where we have to have a drive-through now because it is too big to accommodate it at the campground here," said Sheriff Lew Evangelidis." But, it's a wonderful day to see everybody. I've seen people I haven't seen since last summer. They're so appreciative, so thankful. They just enjoy getting together and we have so many volunteers here from the sheriff's department and our reserve deputy volunteers. It's just a fun celebration of who we are in Worcester County, and remembering those seniors that have done so much for us and saying thank you."

Saturday's picnic was free for seniors who live in Worcester County.
