  • More than 10 students at Jabish Middle School are being investigated for alleged antisemitic behavior

  • One parent said around 50 students were giving other students Nazi salutes and speaking about the Holocaust, concentration camps and death chambers

  • The students are also being investigated for using social media apps to make antisemitic threats as well

  • The school says disciplinary actions as of now are strictly confidential

The school committee recently heard through a letter from a parent, who said around 50 students took part in intimidating Jewish students on campus.

"So we’ve heard from some families that there's been racial incidences in our middle school," school committee chairwoman Heidi Gutekenst said. "There’s been students giving other students the Nazi salute, speaking about the Holocaust or concentration camps, death chambers and things like that.”

Gutekenst said the students are also being investigated for using social media apps to make antisemitic threats as well.

"I wanna say it was Thursday, I believe we got the email about it," said Kaitlyn Staples, a parent who has a daughter at the school. "Asked my daughter about it and said she’s heard the comments going around the school and even she is baffled by the fact that at this point in time, you think we’d be past this?”

Staples said she’s also not surprised by seeing a rise in antisemitism.

"Disbelief honestly, well not even complete disbelief," Staples said. "Because sadly, there’s still a ton of hatred towards people in the world right now. Especially with the political climate and everything going on.”

Gutekenst told Spectrum News she couldn’t comment on potential punishments for students, but the school hopes to use this experience as a teachable moment.

"We’re really focused on education and we don’t want this to happen again," Gutekenst said.  "We want students to understand why what they’re saying and doing is so hurtful and preventing this from happening elsewhere in the school district or in their futures or the future of Jabish.”

Gutekenst said the school is still investigating the incident.
