  • Police said the driver fled a traffic stop prior to the crash

Police said a driver fled a traffic stop early Saturday morning, eventually crashing into the home. One passenger in the vehicle died and a person inside the home was hospitalized.

Frank Skoczylas works at a gas station nearby and said the people who live in the home visit his shop often.

"Now he's in the hospital and his brain's bleeding," Skoczylas said. "Broken ribs, broken bones in his face, it's not good. It's just not good."

Police said the car and home caught fire following the crash and the four people inside the vehicle were all between the ages of 13 and 19.

"I feel sorry for the parents of the one child that passed away," Chicopee resident Kathy Owens said. "I'd like to give them my condolences on their loss."

Meanwhile, Skoczylas said it's not the first time a speeding vehicle has led to issues on Montgomery Street.

"Four houses, three times in one year," Skocylas said. "This house here has been hit last year. This house got hit years ago. Now this one. Guy hit the guardrail that in one year."

Skoczylas said he's doing his part to help support the victim who lived in the home's brother while their family tries to recover.

"Yeah, he stops in here every now and then," said Skoczylas. "I gave him some food and stuff, they've got nowhere to go. When are you gonna do? All the sudden, everything you have is gone."

Police declined to speak on the crash Monday due to the investigation being ongoing. But, in response to a series of deadly pedestrian crashes in the city, the department has recently increased patrols to find distracted drivers and is working to ensure pedestrians are using crosswalks.
