Westborough native Daniel Kwan took home the Oscar for best director Sunday night for his film "Everything Everywhere All at Once."
Kwan graduated from Westborough High School before moving onto Emerson College. Back home, his former high school was celebrating too. Everyone from the principal to Kwan's former English and social studies teachers are proud to see him on such a major stage.
"I remember where he sat in class, it is kind of a funny thing, right?" said Tine Roney, Kwan's former teacher. "I remember this one piece of writing he did at the very, very end of the year and how clever and smart and funny and touching it was."
"I wrote him a little Instagram message this morning," said Colleen Gormely, who also had Kwan as a student. "Even if all these accolades didn't come, he'd still be doing what he's doing because he is really passionate about it. You could hear that in his acceptance speech last night, I got a little teary eyed."
Kwan took home the Oscar for best original screenplay as well. "Everything Everywhere All at Once" also won the night's biggest prize, best picture.
