51-year-old Alonzo Williams is now facing firearm and drug charges. Law enforcement used search warrants and found large amounts of fentanyl and cocaine, as well as a handgun and around $190,000 of counterfeit bills at his Bessemer Street home in Springfield.
"We've taken all of these drugs out of our communities so they can't cause overdoes," said Gulluni. "As I mentioned in my remarks, almost 14,000 pills that contained fentanyl, pounds of cocaine. A lot of raw fentanyl is not gonna be on our streets, is not gonna be consumed by people suffering from addiction, which very likely would've caused countless overdoses."
Gulluni said authorities have investigated Williams and he’s believed to be a key figure in drug trafficking across the Pioneer Valley.
"When you talk about overdoses in Hampden County and Springfield and West Springfield, we now removed someone who was a cog in that machine and we've disrupted that process of distributing lethal narcotics," Gulluni said.
Another step Gulluni is taking to prevent overdoses is addressing social media. He said it’s a major tool local drug dealers use to sell narcotics, so his office and local police departments are taking preventative measures by going to schools and educating young people on the dangers of drug activity online.
