The first crash happened on Monday. On Wednesday, The Hampden County District Attorney’s office arraigned Chicopee resident Benjamin Goraj on charges of motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence and operating under the influence third offense.

The 42-year old driver allegedly struck 68-year old Chicopee resident William Matteson while he was crossing Chicopee Street.

"It's still under investigation so we're not entirely sure as to what the circumstances were," said Chicopee police officer Travis Odiorne. "But they were crossing the street and the vehicle struck them and they tried to render aid on scene and the victim was pronounced deceased on the scene."

On Wednesday night another pedestrian was hit on Chicopee Street while crossing. Police told Spectrum News Thursday afternoon the victim did not survive and they are still looking for the driver.

"We have not spoken to that operator," Odiorne said. "It was initially a hit and run. We're still investigating right now as far as who was operating the vehicle."

Chicopee Police Department said Wednesday's incident is the fifth accident involving a pedestrian in the last six weeks. As it gets darker earlier, the department is reminding people to wear reflective clothing and use flashlights when crossing the street.

"Use your cross walks when possible," said Odiorne. "Be wary of other vehicles in the street as well. When you're crossing, try to make eye contact with the drivers before you step off the cross walk to make sure they actually see you and make sure they actually come a to full stop before you step out."

Chicopee police said they're looking into applying new safety measures with possibly adding more speed bumps and more officers stationed on traffic control throughout the city.
