DEERFIELD, Mass. - Historic Deerfield is working with over 50 volunteers this week to make hand-crafted wreaths to spread some holiday cheer.

What You Need To Know

  • Historic Deerfield is a museum in Deefield, Massachusetts

  • Over 50 volunteers participated in hand-crafted wreath making over the course of three days

  • Over 60 wreaths will be placed around 35 buildings in 59 locations throughout the village

  • The wreaths will be delivered and hung on Thursday, December 1

The historic museum in Deerfield has been hosting their annual workshops for years and provides most of the supplies so local volunteers like Hadley resident Sarah Chadwick are free to focus on the decorations.

"So we assemble the greens in small bunches on these wreath forms," Chadwick said, demonstrating the process. "And wind them very tightly because these wreaths are up for the entire month of December and people come from all over to do the wreath walk here."

Chadwick said she's been a volunteer at the annual event for four years now. On Wednesday, she decided to add some creativity to her hand-crafted wreaths with the some supplies she gathered from her home.

"Horse chestnuts, pine cones, sumac and just glued them onto this wreath form," Chadwick said. "But I added a birds nest this year and a woodpecker hole from a tree that we chopped down."

Montague resident Charlotte Canterbury, who has been making wreaths as a hobby for years, made her debut as a volunteer Wednesday with her mother and sister and said she's excited to be able to explore her passion for a big holiday project.

"We were just hoping that we could take some skills that we had learned and some of the good coaching," Canterbury said. "And learn different things so that we could make wreathes for our house possibly and that we could come back and help others enjoy the beauty of Deerfield."

Canterbury said she and her family visit Historic Deerfield often and said it's important to maintain the town's charm ahead of Christmas.

"I think some people forget a lot how beautiful Deerfield is and how important it is to preserve it," Canterbury said. "And if you just give it that little bit of color, I think it makes people happy to see different colors around Christmas."

Historic Deerfield will be hanging their hand-made wreaths on 35 buildings at 59 locations within the village on Thursday. Anyone looking to volunteer with the historic museum can reach out to them through their website.
