WORCESTER, Mass. - Members of the Worcester community are checking in with their loved ones in Puerto Rico as the island deals with the impact of Hurricane Fiona.

Centro Inc. executive director Juan Gomez said he and many of his co-workers at the multicultural nonprofit have family and friends on the island.

He was able to communicate with people this morning who said some areas are dealing with significant damage to bridges, flash flooding and slides from the mountains putting many in danger. Gomez said they're doing all they can to help people get in touch with loved ones.

"We will provide whatever assistance we can to the families of the employees that we have here," Gomez said. "And, if there are any individuals who have family members that have not been able to communicate and if they come to Centro we will do whatever we can to establish communication through official or unofficial channels."

Gomez said the organization is now waiting for the federal government and the Island of Puerto Rico to determine the level of need, so they can take actions that will fill the gap not being met by the federal or state government as well as other organizations.
