STERLING  - What was once an attraction for families at Davis Farmland’s Mega Maze is now a burnt mess.

“It was just a fantastic exhibit and now, it is totaled, so we’re going to have to drop it,” said Mega Maze co-owner, Larry Davis.

The twin turbo slides, which sat right next to the maze, were set on fire early Tuesday morning.

Davis lives just feet away, and snapped a photo before heading to the scene. He said his neighbors were stargazing when they noticed the flames coming from the maze area.

“Then I get a call from the dispatcher at about 10 minutes to (3 a.m.),” Davis said. “Such a calm person, he was like, ‘Mr. Davis, I don’t want you to worry because you have a fire at your place. It’s at the Mega Maze.’”

Thankfully, no people or animals were injured, but authorities are calling the fire suspicious at this point.

The situation comes at a tough time for Davis and his team, as they are just days away from preparing for the 2022 season.

“The investigation involves things beyond just this structure,” he said. “It involves the area around it, even out into the maze. So, how that will affect us in terms of planting the maze, timing, all that kind of thing. It’s going to come down to some very critical timing to pull things off.”

Davis is now looking for answers.

“Anybody who might see this, and knows somebody that was involved or anything we can do to find out who set this thing, who burned this thing down,” Davis said.

Davis said there is a reward if anyone has information about this fire, and you should contact the local police.

The Mega Maze will open in mid-September.  The Discovery Farm is now open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the summer.
