LUDLOW, Mass. - It’s the opening week for Lupa Zoo and many people are using part of their April vacation time to enjoy it.

On Monday, Senator Eric Lesser and Representative Jacob Oliveira announced $100,000 in funding to make accessibility improvements for people with disabilities as well to help general operations and grow virtual opportunities.

The money will help the local zoo recover a little after COVID-19 affected its business.

It’s a popular spot for families on school vacation. Chicopee resident Annelise Beauchamp spent the day with her grandparents and younger sister.

“It feels great to be back here and I don’t have to wear a mask anymore,” Beauchamp said.

Some were experiencing Lupa Zoo for the first time, while others, like Natalie Santana, are regulars every year.

“So it’s the first time that we’ve actually come this season with it being opening week,” Santana said. “We decided to come with a bunch of my daughter’s friends so tack on like 10 four-year-olds at the zoo at one time. It gets a little crazy.”

Other visitors traveled from Connecticut, like Alexa Harnish and Anna Matulis. Thursday’s weather seemed to be a big factor behind a visit to the zoo.

“It’s a beautiful day, it’s really nice out so we were looking to get out of the house for once,” Harnish said.

“And we’re on Spring Break this week, so just something fun to do,” Matulis added.

The additional funding the zoo received from the state came from the 2022 budget and a COVID-19 relief act. The 20-acre conservation and educational area is open every day, weather permitting through October.
