WORCESTER, Mass. - The city council voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Eric Batista as acting City Manager when Ed Augustus steps down on May 31.

“The last two years, we’ve talked about inclusivity and diversity, and I thought this was a good chance also to do that here in the city of Worcester,” Mayor Joseph Petty said at Tuesday's meeting.

What You Need To Know

  • Eric Batista will be the city's acting City Manager when Ed Augustus steps down
  • Augustus' last day is May 31
  • Batista said he's interested in the full-time position
  • Worcester City Council will be conducting a search for a full-time replacement

Batista said he’s excited about the chance to fill Augustus’ shoes.

“You know, it’s just a benefit for me and my family, and an opportunity I think I don’t take lightly,” Batista said. “I’m proud to serve in this role.”

Batista will be the first city manager of color in Worcester. He currently serves as one of two assistant city managers alongside Nicole Valentine, and is also filling in as chief diversity officer.

Batista said he’s walking into this position during challenging times.

“How do we move forward in these tough economic times?” Batista, 39, said. “Inflation is extremely high. We have a housing crisis, issue not only in the city, but nationwide.”

Batista said he had no interest in government before being hired by former City Manager Mike O’Brien in 2012. He now points to 10 years of shadowing O’Brien and Augustus as experience he believes will benefit him on the job.

“I understand the aspects of operations, from DPW to fire to police to human resources, etc.,” Batista said. “I’ve had a little bit of touch in every element.”

As acting City Manager, Batista didn’t point to any specific priorities.

“I’m just going to be an acting,” he said. “So, my job is to make sure that the lights are on and we keep moving in the right direction.”

The city will conduct a search for the next city manager. Batista is making it clear when all is said and done, he’d like the term ‘acting’ to be dropped from the title.

“I am interested in the opportunity,” Batista said. “You know, we look forward to the process the city council will carry forward and see where it goes.”

Batista will start the position June 1, the day after Augustus formally steps down. There’s no time frame on how long he’ll be acting city manager. He’ll be in the position until the city finds a permanent replacement.
