LUDLOW, Mass. - A steady showing of support for the people of Ukraine coming as donations at the Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ludlow.
“Our work that we do right now, if it saves at least one life, it’s worth to do it,” Father Andriy Krip said. “So we’re gonna try our best to do what we do right now to help those people.””
Father Krip said he keeps in touch with his family in Ukraine every day, but the uncertainty of not knowing whether the next phone call will be the last one scares him.
For many, the invasion of Ukraine has inspired support for people fleeing the country, but Father Krip describes the efforts of his community as “heart-melting.”
“Last week, there were two small girls, maybe 10 years old. They came and brought the bag with money that they collected over the summer selling something, like juice or whatever. They had their activity, and they collected and they brought all of this money to support Ukraine,” Father Krip said.
In three days, the church said it’s prepared over 50 large boxes to ship to Ukraine, and it’s getting hundreds of phone calls a day to offer help.
The church is using a fully licensed Ukrainian shipping company who’s still moving humanitarian aid to the country.
“People there are dying,” Father Krip said. “Children are dying and killed and injured, so it’s probably the least we can do to help those people.”
Father Krip said they really need over-the-counter medicine, first aid, and child care items like diapers right now for the people in Ukraine who do not have access to supplies.
