WORCESTER, Mass. - The Thanksgiving holiday appears to be causing a significant spike in testing and vaccinations at Worcester's Mercantile Center.

UMass Memorial Health says they administered almost 800 COVID-19 tests on Monday, marking a jump of nearly 300 from the week before.

On Monday, they also completely ran out of vaccine doses at the end of the day.

Michelle Muller is a program manager for the Stop the Spread site.  She says they were expecting to administer between 50 and 60 vaccines, but ended up giving around 70 instead.

Muller says patients are mainly getting boosters, and they're still encouraging people to get their vaccine if they haven't already.

“Just for comparison, two weeks ago we were doing about 15 to 20 (vaccines) per day. Prior to that, we were giving about 30 vaccines per day. So it was hard to predict. And then one day, we started giving 35 to 45 you know in one week and then it just increased,” Muller said. “Last Thursday was one of the biggest days. We had about 50."

The Mercantile Center location offers both adult and pediatric doses of the vaccine.

Muller says she doesn't expect numbers to become as dramatic as they were last holiday season, but does expect another increase as we head towards Christmas.
