WORCESTER. Mass. - Police shot and killed an armed man who claimed to have a bomb on Grafton Hill in Worcester early Wednesday morning, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight. Police blocked off most of Grafton Street from below Hamilton Street and the Billings Square rotary to the I-290 on-ramp. The street reopened around 8 a.m.

Police say a man with a rifle, body armor and a backpack claimed he had a bomb when he was confronted by police officers on Grafton Street. Our media partners at NECN report the man called 9-1-1 and informed dispatcher he had a bomb and a second bomb was somewhere in the city.

District Attorney Early said during the confrontation, the man advanced towards officers and was shot by police. 

The Massachusetts State Police bomb squad was called to the scene, but had left the Grafton St. area before 5 a.m. The WPD Critical Incident Response Team and detectives were on scene.

A press conference will be held at 11 a.m. at the Worcester Police Department headquarters.
