WORCESTER, Mass. - Nurses at Saint Vincent Hospital began what will be daily picketing on Wednesday.
The healthcare workers are protesting unsafe conditions during the pandemic.
According to the Massachusetts Nurses Association, more than 400 official reports citing safety concerns have been filed, and more than a hundred nurses have left the hospital due to the conditions.
More than 400 nurses picketed for the same reasons last month. Registered Nurse Marlena Pellegrino says things have only gotten worse since their last demonstration, and now they're concerned as they await the post-holiday surge.
Pellegrino said, "We are struggling to maintain minimum standards of care for patients. Giving them medication on time, turning them, repositioning them, basic hygiene. Without the staff available, nurses are despondent. They're leaving the hospital feeling like 'what have I missed, what haven't my patients gotten today?' and it's just unacceptable."
In a statement, Saint Vincent Hospital says they are proud of the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by caregivers and staff during this unprecedented pandemic.
Pellegrino says the pickets are scheduled to take place every day until they reach a new contract.
Talks are expected to resume later this month.
