Elms College created two plans for the fall semester. The Elms Flex Plan allowed students the option to learn in person or remote. The Elms Safe Plan was for those who wanted to return to campus for in-person learning.
Harry Dumay, Ph.D., MBA, Elms College President said, "All of that was well executed and we had a successful semester."
The Safe Plan involved daily health checks, testing and other safety guidelines. Dr. Dumay said it was successful because students and staff followed all the guidelines the college put in place. He said it's the reason why there have been no coronavirus outbreaks on campus.
"In the rare cases where someone was exposed to or tested positive for COVID-19, we were able to identify that immediately, have the individual tested, quarantined and following all the protocols," said Dr. Dumay.
Students Spectrum News 1 spoke to seem to like the plans. Chrissy Bernardi is taking classes at Elms and chose to learn remotely.
"Even though I was afraid of taking online courses because I thought it was going to be a lot more difficult, my professors have been awesome," she said.
Bernardi had a positive experience with the Elms Flex Model and said the virtual set up was well established for students who chose this option.
"They have been very accommodating and have made it so that the classes are very easily accessible and you are still getting the same information that you would if you were on campus," said Bernardi.
All students went virtual after Thanksgiving, but the college said they will be adapting this same method for the spring semester.
"Students are going to come back in January and we are going to take lessons from their feedback and from what we learned in the fall to have an even more fulfilling and more supportive semester for them to continue to learn and grow," said Dr. Dumay.
