WORCESTER - After 34 years in business, a popular college bar in Worcester, The Blarney Stone, has closed.

An owner from the bar appeared in front of the Worcester License Commission for a hearing on Wednesday morning for multiple violations, including the selling of alcoholic beverages to an intoxicated person.

The bar posted the following on their Facebook page: "It is with a heavy heart we announce today that the Blarney Stone is closed indefinitely. We love and appreciate you all and your patronage over the years. Thanks for the memories."

At the meeting, Worcester Police said the owner of the bar, Thomas McCabe, was uncooperative in an investigation of a motor vehicle homicide that occurred in November. According to a reports, an individual involved in the motor vehicle homicide had consumed alcoholic beverages at The Blarney Stone during the evening in question. Further, McCabe couldn't immediately provide surveillance footage of the night in question and the bartender working that night wasn't TIPS certified.

Ultimately the police were able to review the tapes, and the individual in question was served six mixed drinks, three beers, two Jell-O shots and a Twisted Tea. The individual fell down three times, rested his head on the bar and was given a Jell-O shot after he fell down the third time.

McCabe apologized for what occurred and told the License Commission that the bar wouldn't re-open and he would be selling the business. The License Commission revoked the business' liquor license which was first obtained in 1986.

Following their closing announcement on Facebook, the bar shared a story from MassLive of a 23-year-old man who struck and killed a Framingham man on Chandler St. in November with the caption: "For those of you asking this is why we are closed."

Blarney Stone is one of the oldest neighborhood bars in Worcester. It's located at 79 Maywood Street.
