Young athletes in Worcester will be allowed to play in games once again starting tonight, as part of the city's plan for Phase 3, Part 1 reopening.

Worcester's Division of Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Division announced its plans to allow for baseball, softball, and field hockey games to be played starting Tuesday. Permits for small events to be held in parks will also be issued.

Assistant Commissioner Rob Antonelli says while games can be played, tournaments are not allowed. He says there are restrictions in place for safety on game day.

"They want to limit as much capacity as possible. What they're really looking for is players, coaches, and one … spectator per person,” said Antonelli. “We are working with each of the leagues individually on that, how they manage that component. Six-foot distance, trying to keep that separation as we continue to move forward with staying in a positive trend on what we are doing on the virus in the state as a whole.”

Handball and tennis courts are also open, but basketball and volleyball courts remain closed. As of now, fields for football, soccer, rugby, lacrosse, and ultimate frisbee are open for practice only with a permit.

Antonelli says the division will adjust as the state moves into Phase 3, Step 2.
