LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Council and Office of the Circuit Court Clerk are starting Operation Green Light beginning Nov. 4. Now through Veterans Day Louisville’s clock tower and several other buildings will be lighted in green to honor veterans.
The National Association of County Veterans Service Officers is leading the initiative.
Last year, more than 300 counties participated in Operation Green Light.
The Louisville Metro Council President Markus Winkler, D-District 17, said in a release sent to Spectrum News 1: “From Nov. 4-11, 2024, we will illuminate City Hall’s historic clock tower in green to honor the courage, dedication and sacrifice of the brave men and women who have faithfully served our country and commonwealth. This symbolic gesture serves as a beacon of gratitude and appreciation for their unwavering commitment to protecting our freedoms and way of life.”
They hope to raise awareness around the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state and federal levels to help veterans and their families.
Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk David Nicholson said that it’s especially important to honor veterans this week.
“It’s this week. We are going to be voting. These are the men and women that have protected our democracy and allowed us the opportunity to participate in the voting process. It’s just a nice way to honor their courage,” said Nicholson.
Local officials are encouraging other residents and businesses to participate. You can do that by hanging a green light outside your door, business, or in your yard.
Operation green light runs today through Nov. 11.
