Homeowners and renters in 15 Kentucky counties who were hit by severe storms in May are eligible to receive assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Officials report that so far FEMA has approved over $2.1 million in repair grants, temporary lodging grants and grants for other needs for people who suffered losses during the severe storms from May 21-27.

If you plan to apply for FEMA assistance, the deadline is Sept. 23. 

The following counties are eligible for assistance: 

  • Butler
  • Caldwell
  • Calloway
  • Christian
  • Clay
  • Greenup
  • Hopkins
  • Knox
  • Logan
  • Muhlenberg
  • Simpson
  • Todd
  • Trigg
  • Warren
  • Whitley

You can start the application on the Disaster Assistance website. Once you apply, you can expect to hear from a home inspector. 

“It’s really important to set up that home inspection with the home inspector when they call you or when they text you,” said Gerard Hammink with FEMA. 

He said FEMA also does outreach after the application is submitted. They might reach out to ask about missing documents.

If your application is denied, you can appeal the decision.

“We can only help with uninsured losses. If you have insurance and you say that, it will default to ineligible, but if you submit your insurance settlement, then we can see what was covered and if there is any other assistance you might qualify for,” said Hammink. 

You can mail your appeal within 60 days from the date on your FEMA decision letter to the FEMA National Processing Service Center or upload the documents online.
