Thursday, Jan. 6 was the day of the first recorded snowfall across Kentucky for the new year.

What You Need To Know

  • Lexington broke a snowfall record

  • Moderate accumulations fell in western Kentucky

  • Lower totals were measured in northern Kentucky

Several areas measured decent amounts of snow. Lexington's total of 9.9 inches broke the record for the day. Central and eastern Kentucky saw the most snowfall out of the state, with values ranging from 6 to 10 inches.

Northern Kentucky saw the least snowfall, with most locations only receiving about an inch or less. Western Kentucky measured values of 4 to 6 inches, with a total in Bowling Green of 6.3 inches. Louisville had a measurement of 3 inches.

The snow compromised travel as it covered roadways and created some slick driving conditions throughout the afternoon and evening. Those issues remained into the following night as temperatures dropped into the teens, allowing the snowfall to remain frozen.

The average annual snowfall totals across Kentucky amount to about 11 inches, so this event was quite the kickoff to our winter season!
