If you are a fan of astronomical events or just appreciate of the sky in general, tonight will be quite exciting across the Commonwealth.
Two lunar events are occurring. The full Beaver Moon and a lunar eclipse will both happen in the middle of the night.
The full Beaver Moon will begin to appear right after sunset and will be most illuminated between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Eastern Time. It is called the Beaver Moon because this is the time of the year when beavers make their shelters and store food for the winter.
Also, to make the moon a bit more interesting, a partial lunar eclipse comes tonight. This will be the longest partial eclipse in 600 years, lasting for a little more than 3 hours. The eclipse will begin at 2:30 a.m. ET and will have its peak at 4:02 a.m. ET. The eclipse will end at 5:30 a.m. ET.
You don't need to wear special glasses to look at a lunar eclipse.
Luckily for Kentucky, our weather pattern favors viewing! Tonight will have statewide clear skies, so no cloud cover will interfere with observing this space event.
Temperatures will be chilly, though, with values dipping into the upper 20s tonight. Bundle up if you are trying to catch a glimpse of the moon tonight!
