What You Need To Know

  • The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is planning to improve New Circle Road in Lexington

  • Work will take place between Leestown and Georgetown Roads

  • Motorists are advised overnight construction will occur this week, ending Saturday morning, Dec. 9

  • The project is expected to conclude in August 2026

Beginning Dec. 5, the KYTC began construction designed to improve New Circle Road (Kentucky Route 4) in Lexington between Leestown (U.S. Route 421) and Georgetown Roads (U.S. Route 25). Motorists are advised overnight construction will take place 7 p.m. through 7 a.m. this week, ending Saturday morning, Dec. 9. Due to milling and paving operations, periodic lane closures will be in effect; however, signage will be in place to guide drivers, who will be able to pass through the work zone.

The project's purpose is to enhance the capacity and operation of New Circle Road and the Leestown Interchange, according to a news release. New Circle Road will have three lanes in each direction with a paved median and barrier wall. The Leestown Interchange, which connects to New Circle, will be a double crossover diamond design.

The KYTC adds the plan is similar to the Harrodsburg Road (U.S. Route 68) interchange, which opened in 2011 and has reduced crashes since. Existing sidewalks on both sides of New Circle and through the interchange will connect to new sidewalks along Leestown.

Studies and evaluations for the plan began in 2012, including traffic counts and public input. According to the KYTC, the project will cost more than $60,000 to complete, with work awarded to L-M Asphalt Partners, Ltd. Work is expected to conclude Aug. 1, 2026.
