LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Golf fans from across the country have arrived in Louisville to watch the World’s best golfers compete in the 2024 PGA Championship.
On Tuesday, rain moved in over Valhalla Golf Club and lingered all day, but the weather did not dampen anyone’s excitement. “It is stunningly beautiful,” Gary Harlow said, looking out over the course.
Harlow and his wife Bette have traveled to Kentucky from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and have tallied quite a few majors over the years. The Harlow’s say the access professional golf offers tops any other major sport.
“They are so much fun to watch and it is the only major sporting event where you can get as close to the players almost as I am to you. All the rest you don’t get close, you don’t hear them talking. Here you can hear their caddies talking…” Harlow explained.
Mrs. Harlow is an avid golfer, herself. “I can come out here. I can walk it and then I can have that experience to take home and when I watch it on TV, I know what their challenges are on that hole,” she said.
The rain moved in by late morning, which resulted in a short postponement of practice rounds. Play resumed within the hour. By the time Spectrum News met up with the Harlow’s, they had already walked the front nine. Mr. Harlow has volunteered at not less than seven majors tournaments in the past and while he or his wife are spectators for the PGA Championship at Valhalla, they plan to work at least two others this summer. And it should be noted while the couple are longtime Pennsylvania residents, Mr. Harlow was born and raised in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
“I went to Western Kentucky. I graduated in 1973 and then I went to graduate school at Cornell and unfortunately, I haven’t been able to migrate back,” Harlow said.
Practice rounds continue Wednesday, and tournament play begins Thursday. The PGA released the pairings earlier Tuesday.
