“Halfway through, they were like, ‘You can break (a) record,'" said Ava Jones, the 16-year-old archer. "And when I was done, they thought I had broke a national record, and somebody came up and told them that I had broken a world record. So I was not expecting that at all.”

Just more than a month later, Jones broke her old record, scoring 533 out of 600 points at the USA Indoor Nationals in Madisonville.

The performance landed her in the top eight in the nation of all ages in barebow women, which she said was a milestone that stunned her.

“When you have something this exciting, you just kind of go blank," Jones said.

Jones also shot the Lancaster Archery Classic, which is one of the largest indoor shoots for barebow archers. Jones shot as an adult, finishing third place.

Jones said she normally practices in her 20-yard-long garage an hour to an hour-and-a-half almost every day. She sharpens her skills by practicing at different lengths, adjusting her tools if necessary.

She always aims for the yellow, which is essentially the bullseye.

“When I’m looking, I’m looking straight down at the arrow tip and lining up the yellow like an eclipse," she said.

Nine times out of 10, it makes for a perfect shot.

Jones was invited the USA Indoor Finals, where she competed with the top women in the nation. She made it to the finals and placed second overall.

Jones has now finished her indoor season and is moving onto 3D and outdoor target, where another record may be in her sights.
