LOUISVILLE, Ky.  — From 2003 to 2006, it was the Brohm and Bush show for the University of Louisville football team. Quarterback Brian Brohm often handed the ball off to running back Michael Bush.

Bush is one of the all-time leading rushers at UofL and Friday, Bush will have his jersey honored at the Florida State home opener. Bush’s jersey is the 26th to be celebrated by the program. His name will join other notables around the ring of the stadium.

The Louisville native and Male High School alum helped guide the Cardinals three consecutive bowl games,including a win over No. 10 Boise State in the 2004 Liberty Bowl.

According to UofL, Bush was one of the most highly recruited players ever to sign with UofL. His 2,508 rushing yards have him eighth all-time in school history and his 39 career touchdowns are the third-most in school history.

Bush’s best year for the Cards was the 2005 season, despite missing two games. He set a single-season record with 23 touchdowns and help take the Cards to the Gator Bowl.

His senior season was cut short in the opening game against Kentucky when he suffered a season-ending leg injury. He broke his shin during a routine play in the third quarter. Bush had already scored three touchdowns and UofL beat Kentucky 59-28.

The Oakland Raiders took Bush in the fourth round. He played four years with the Raiders and two more with the Chicago Bears. In his 6-years in the NFL, Bush rushed for 3,250 yards, scored 29 rushing touchdowns and had 1,010 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

A two-sport athlete at Male High, Bush twice earned the Paul Hornung Award as the state’s best prep football player, was named Mr. Football and Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior and was runner-up for Mr. Basketball, averaging 21.1 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

Friday is a “Red Out” for the game against Florida State. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
