LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Horse racing fans rejoice. If you would like to watch the nation's top Thoroughbreds train for their appearances in this year's Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, you can do so beginning April 17.


What You Need To Know

  • Free morning works at Churchill Downs April 17 through April 28

  • Visitors can watch from 7-10 a.m.

  • There is a special Oaks and Derby trining window from 7:30-7:45 a.m.

  • Oaks and Derby contenders will be in special saddle towels

 

Every day through April 28, Churchill Downs will open free-of-charge from 7-10 a.m. so visitors can watch the horses.

 “There’s no better way to start the day than to watch our majestic Thoroughbreds train up-close and personal," said Churchill Downs Racetrack President Mike Anderson. He added, "We’re thrilled to deliver this new experience free of charge and open it up to the general public for everyone to enjoy.” 

Horses train on the main track every day from 5:15-10 a.m. Beginning April 17, there will be an exclusive Oaks and Derby training window from 7:30-7:45 a.m. Each of the horses will have special saddle towels which include their names: pink towels for Oaks contenders and yellow saddle towels for Derby horses. 

Guests can enter Churchill Downs through the Paddock Gate and should park for free in the nearby white Lot for convenient entry. Guests will be directed to Sections 115-117 to watch the morning workouts. Face masks will be required and guests will need to practice social distancing. 

The Kentucky Derby Morning Works will be livestreamed by Churchill Downs on its social medial channels beginning Monday, April 19. 

Those coming out to watch the morning works between April 17 and April 23 will be allowed to bring in their own food and drinks. Food and beverages won't be allowed in after April 24 because of Kentucky Derby Week safety procedures. The new Paddock Grill will be open during that time for breakfast purchases. 

The 147th runnings of the Longines Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve will be held on April 30 and May 1. For the current leader board and all things related to the Oaks and Derby, visit our special section.
