LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A "red" zone week for Jefferson County and its high coronavirus cases has Jefferson County Public Schools adjusting sports schedules.
There will be no JCPS football games Friday night or this weekend. However, JCPS football teams will be allowed to compete in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) state playoffs next week as the district has allowed other teams to participate in post-season play. The playoffs are under the jurisdiction of the KHSAA and will be conducted using strict protocols.
Winter sports groups can practice in small groups, but cannot participate in game-like simulations during practice.
Following the recommendations of Gov. Andy Beshear, JCPS will again reevaluate coronavirus data next Thur., Nov. 12, and make a determination about sports Fri., Nov. 13.
Being in the "red" category means there are at least 25 coronavirus cases per 100,000 people. The Kentucky Department of Education and the Kentucky Department of Public Health have determined red to be the most serious of COVID-19 categories. School districts across the commonwealth review the data each week to make a decision about not only sports but all school-related activities.
