LOUISVILLE, Ky. — LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Positive COVID-19 tests among the University of Louisville football team has the school canceling Saturday's scheduled game against the University of Virginia.
Vice-President/Director of Athletics Vince Tyra announced 10 players and five members of the support staff tested positive for coronavirus. Five other players and two other staff members are also in quarantine due to contact tracing. No members of the coaching staff have the virus. It is limited to players and members of the training staff. Tyra said the symptoms of all of those affected are very mild.
Tyra said he isn't sure how the virus entered the program, but it began with the defensive line. Nine players were unavailable to play during the Oct. 31 game against Virginia Tech. because of COVID-19.
The decision to postpone the upcoming game was because more players and staff tested positive. Tyra believes the bye week will be beneficial for both teams to get healthier.
All team-related football activities are being paused indefinitely due to the virus and accompanying contact tracing measures among the Cardinals’ staff and team members.
“We are taking a precautionary measure to pause due to the number of student-athletes and staff that have been impacted by the virus,” said Tyra. “With Virginia and us both having a bye week on November 14, we are fortunate to reschedule the game for that date. It also avails us a chance to gauge any further spread of the virus. Test results from both Friday and Sunday will dictate when we return to team activities. We appreciate the ACC and Virginia working with us at this time.”
The game between the Cardinals and the Cavaliers is now tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, November 14 at 3:30 p.m. on ACCN. The teams were able to reschedule the game because both teams had the open date.
