KENTUCKY — The pitch to have a 2020 Minor League baseball season has struck out. MiLB announced that because Major League Baseball won't provide affiliated teams with players in 2020, the MiLB season is canceled.

The news is tough for the Louisville Bats, the Lexington Legends, and the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

“While we are disappointed in losing our 2020 season, we understand why the decision was made.” Says President and CEO of the Legends, Andy Shea. “Despite the fact that there will be no Minor League Baseball this year, we look forward to rooting for the Kansas City Royals, our parent team.”

Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the Legends, will hostthe  College Commonwealth Baseball Club this summer.  Safety protocols and an adjusted capacity have been put into place for all upcoming games played at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

Louisville Bats President, Vic Gregovits said, "While we are disappointed that we will not have Bats baseball at Louisville Slugger Field this summer, our first priority is the safety of our fans, players, and staff during these unprecedented times. We anxiously await the 2021 season, welcoming fans back to the ballpark, and the return of the words, 'Play ball'."

“We have been anticipating an official announcement for a while now. While we certainly understand, it is disappointing and sad that we won’t get to see our Hot Rods players, fans, and our second family at the ballpark this year.” Said Hot Rods General Manager and COO Eric C. Leach.

MiLB President/CEO Pat O'Conner said that the 2020 season cancellation means there won't be minor league ball for the first time since MiLB was founded in September 1901.

Major League Baseball is preparing to go forward with a 60-game regular season, starting in July.
