LEXINGTON, Ky. — For a single weekend in August, the Lexington Legends are changing their name and their logo as a homage to a beloved Kentucky staple, beer cheese.
The weekend of August 13-15, the Legends will be going by the name of the Kentucky Beer Cheese. The Legends are choosing to change their identity to honor the Lexington-Bluegrass area, and all of Kentucky. Beer cheese is a Kentucky staple. The cheddar-based spread is used on sandwiches, burgers, soups, and just by itself.
“The Beer Cheese industry is massive and has always enjoyed having a home in Kentucky after it was birthed in Clark County,” said Legends President and CEO, Andy Shea. “We have been cheesing ever since we had the opportunity to partner with KentuckyBeer Cheese on this collaboration. We are very excited about spreading Beer Cheese hats, logos, and uniforms throughout Kentucky and Minor League Baseball. We can’t wait to ‘Say Cheese’ and enjoy this new alternate identity of the Legends!”
Along with a cheesy name change, fans can look forward to buying some cheesy souvenirs including t-shirts and hats.
The team is partnering with Kentucky Beer Cheese, a well-known brand throughout the commonwealth. Kentucky Beer Cheese was founded in 1987 by Sue and Jim Castano using a recipe from Johnny Alman's restaurant, located on the Kentucky River. Sue Castano made a few changes to the recipe and started selling it to friends. In 2004, the Castanos sold the company to Diane and Chris Evans who have continued to produce the Kentucky product.
Fans going to see the Legends will also find specialty foods on sale that weekend. Concessions stands will include beer cheese pizza, chicken beer cheese egg rolls, beer cheese burgers and a beer cheese melt on Texas toast.
The Legends 2020 season begins April 7 against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The team's home opener is April 9 against the Greenville Drive. The Legends are the Class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals and a member of the South Atlantic League.
