LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville Cardinals are the new number one team in the Associated Press men's college basketball poll.  Not to be outdone, the Louisville women's basketball team shot up to the No. 2 slot after defeating No. 1 Oregon.

The Louisville men moved up to the top spot after last week's No. 1 Duke lost to Stephen F. Austin.  Being in the top slot has been hard to hold on to so far this season. The Cards are the fourth different team to be No. 1 in the last five weeks. Kentucky held the top spot for a week but dropped after losing to Evansville last month.

The Cardinals will face No. 4 Michigan Tuesday, December 3 at the KFC Yum! Center when it hosts the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Michigan was unranked last week and ties a 1989 Kansas team with the biggest poll jump after winning the Battle 4 Atlantis at Paradise Island, Bahamas.  The Wolverine beat Iowa State, No. 6 North Carolina, and No 8. Gonzaga.

The last time Louisville was No. 1 was January 14, 2013 and they went on to win the National Championship that year.

The Kentucky Wildcats are in the top 10.  The Cats climbed one spot this week and are sitting at No. 8.

Head coach Jeff Walz and the Cardinals spent the holidays participating in the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas. 8 teams, including the Cardinals came into the tourney undefeated, only the Cards could still say that after the weekend. Saturday the Cardinals beat top-ranked Oregon 72-62. The team made the biggest leap in the poll going from No. 8 to No. 2. This was Oregon's first double digit loss since the 2017 NCAA tournament when it lost a regional final to Notre Dame.

Louisville got another big boost by the fact that No. 2 Baylor also lost to No. 5 South Carolina in the same tournament.

Walz said he learned a lot about his team following the three-game tournament.

“I wasn’t sure if we had the ability to defend at a high level and truly follow a team-specific scout,” he said. “After this week, three games in three days, this group showed me they can do it. We still have a long way to go to get to where some of our teams have been in the past defensively, but I believe they can get there.”
