Kentucky Republicans are lining up behind former President Donald Trump in response to his guilty verdict of 34 felony charges of falsifying business records in his New York criminal hush-money trial.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said the charges should have never been brought in the first place, adding he thinks they should be overturned on appeal.
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, said it was a "sad day for America."
Rep. Andy Barr, R-Kentucky, said the verdict "won't stop me and millions of Americans from acquitting the President of these politically motivated charges and sending him back to the White House in November."
Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, said "This kangaroo court is an insult to the American justice system and to the very foundation of our constitutional democracy."
Said Rep. James Comer, R-Tompkinsville, "One thing is clear: Democrats are afraid to face Donald Trump. Americans will make their voices heard this November."
Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Crescent Springs, said "prosecutors have turned our legal system into a farce at both the state and federal level."
Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Kentucky, said the trial is a "political travesty and will be reversed on appeal."
Kentucky's lone Democrat in Congress, Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville, said "In America, no one is above the law. Donald Trump, the convicted felon, is the presumptive Republican nominee for president and he is unfit to serve in any public order, especially President of the United States."
Trump will be sentenced July 11 and faces a sentence ranging from probation to four years in prison.
