LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sen. Denise Harper Angel, D-Louisville, announced her decision not to file for reelection at the end of her current term.

Harper Angel has represented District 35 in the Kentucky State Senate since 2005. She was previously Jefferson County property valuation administrator from 1990 to 2004, serving as the first woman elected for the role. 

“Serving the people of the Commonwealth has been a profound honor,” Harper Angel said in a news release. “I am immensely proud of our work in the General Assembly, notably our efforts to bring justice for victims of rape and other initiatives to protect our most vulnerable citizens. These have been critical in ensuring safety and support for those in dire need. As my term concludes, I am dedicated to continuing this vital work through the upcoming 2024 Regular Session.”

Harper Angel’s term expires at the end of 2024 and leaders from both sides of the aisle spoke about her work in the General Assembly n the release announcing her decision.

Senate President Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, said, “I appreciate the time I’ve served with Denise. Sometimes we agreed and sometimes we didn’t. On the Senate floor though, no matter what, she was always professional in her conduct and decorum. I wish her all the best in the future!”

Senate Democratic Floor Leader Gerald Neal, D-Louisville, added, “Senator Harper Angel’s dedication and achievements have been monumental, especially in her advocacy for victims. Her presence will be greatly missed in the Senate, but her legacy of compassion and justice will undoubtedly carry on. I am proud of the work we have accomplished together, and I wish her all the best moving forward.”

Harper Angel represents a portion of Jefferson County, including Louisville. The filing deadline for the next election is Jan. 5, 2024.
