LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Breonna Taylor would have turned 30 years old on Monday. In her honor, her mother Tamika Palmer, and many others gathered in downtown Louisville with a statewide call to action; to ensure Daniel Cameron doesn’t become governor.

What You Need To Know

  • Local and national activists announce a statewide voter registration campaign

  • Organizers oppose Attorney General Daniel Cameron becoming Governor

  • It's in part because of Cameron's handling of the Breonna Taylor case

  • The last day to register to vote is Oct. 10

“We’re not making this up. He showed us that he doesn’t deserve to be in that position and we cannot allow him to get there,” Palmer said. “It started with Breonna for us, but if he gets in that position they’re going to continuously kill us and he’s okay with that.”

Spearheaded by the social justice organization Until Freedom, the group soon plans to kick off a statewide voter registration campaign. It will have field offices in Louisville and Lexington.

“So we will be training people across the state, hiring canvassers, going door to do, doing ads and making sure that the people of Kentucky understand that Attorney General Daniel Cameron is bad news for the state of Kentucky,” Linda Sarsour, co-founder of Until Freedom said.

Palmer, and members of Until Freedom, point to Cameron’s handling of the botched 2020 raid that killed Taylor. Specifically, that no officers involved were charged with her death.

“We’re not telling you this story, we’re not making up this story, the jurors, several jurors came forward to say themselves that they were never presented with a case that gave them the ability to indict the officers who killed Breonna Taylor,” Tamika Mallory, co-founder of Until Freedom said.

In Oct. 2020, two jurors, one a white man and the other a Black man, spoke out about the grand jury proceedings through statements but have remained anonymous.

Both men told “CBS This Morning” in an interview that many members of the grand jury were upset over statements by Kentucky’s attorney general that the grand jury “agreed” that the homicide charges against the officers were not on the table because the Louisville police officers were justified in returning fire at Taylor’s apartment.

In a statement to Spectrum News, Daniel Cameron calls Taylor’s death a tragedy:

Every day, the Taylor family wakes up knowing someone they loved is no longer with them. My obligation is to follow the law, no matter what—even when protesters show up on my lawn. Unlike Andy Beshear, I’ll never abandon the law or our cops for political purposes. Andy Beshear has downplayed crime in Kentucky, ignoring skyrocketing homicides in Louisville and even saying it’s ‘unfair’ to use the word ‘looting’ to describe robbery. I’ve always followed the law without fear or favor, and that’s exactly what I’ll do as governor. “

In July 2020, 87 protesters were arrested outside of Cameron’s home after a demonstration there.

“Elections have consequences. I got a Black man elected in Barack Obama. I’m going to make sure this Black man in Daniel Cameron does not get elected,” Michael Black, with Atlas Strategy Group, said.

To fund their campaign, the group is asking for donations from those who also feel Cameron should not be elected.

Cameron is the Republican nominee for Kentucky Gov.. He will face off against incumbent Democrat Andy Beshear this November.

The last day to register for the General Election is Oct. 10.
