LEXINGTON, Ky. — A middle schooler is getting a head start on his plans to run for Congress. William Huffman, 11 years old, has already spent time inside the United States Capitol in the House of Representative Chambers and in the Kentucky State Capitol.
While it isn’t something most children get to do, or even choose to do, Huffman is embracing politics beyond a hobby. He is nearly 14 years ahead of his goal of pursuing a career in politics. His slogan is “Bringing common sense to Congress.”
“Most people are like, what? [They] Think I’m kind of kidding, whenever I say that I like to really run for it,” Huffman said.
His goal grew out of his care for the state of government. Huffman is already focusing on current events, watching Senate and House sessions and meeting with current politicians.
“Just kind of sparked something. I feel like I was always watching the TV about all the news, and then whenever I got older, it was just surreal to me to see how our government works,” Huffman said.
He is even working on an official website, with a temporary website at the moment, to help launch his platform and stay connected with his supporters.
Huffman’s also held public speaking events and community engagement givebacks.
The aspiring politician said he hopes to make a difference with policies that highlight health care, public safety and fair government decision-making.
As part of his platform, Huffman said he wants to make life easier for everyone.
“I want to run on it, like making sure that every person is able to have health care,” Huffman said.
With support, Huffman said he believes he can lift the needs and concerns of many and is determined to show the world that even the smallest voices can be heard.
