LEXINGTON, Ky. — It has been almost a decade since Komesha Evans changed her life through Mobile Mission Experience, which is helping young moms like herself.
Evans, a Clarksdale, Mississippi, native, said becoming a young mother of a now-10-year-old and 2-year-old in her 20s was a tough journey. However, the nonprofit became the village she didn’t know she would need.
“Even though I had already been in Lexington from 2015 to when I found Mobile Mission in, like, 2021, I still felt new to Lexington,” Evans said.
Founder Natalie Mims and treasurer Andrea Woodson lead the group and work in remote spaces and with donations. They help with financial needs and offer resources ranging from diapers, wipes and car seats to housing and jobs for mothers such as Evans, who now works in health care.
“Nothing's going to stop us to make sure that we do what we are commissioned to do," Mims said.
“My great-granny raised me from when I was a baby," Evans said. "When she passed, and she was old, she was 99. I always said it would have been nice if I would have been able to take care of her in her last hours.“
The nonprofit is gearing up for its annual Thanksgiving basket giveaway. Dinner baskets will offer a turkey and other locally sourced food.
Evans said Mims and the group have been her "chosen family."
“I've been in little organizations before, but this one was different," Evans said. "It was different because they continued to care. It's like, with other ones, I felt we were there in the moment. And by a certain age or how long you were in there, that was that, and it's just kind of like you start fading away."
Now not only have many of her worries receded, but she shares her story with other mothers.
“Our trust is centered, our interpersonal skills, our outlook on life and what we are taking in as nutrition," Mims said. "I think all of those factors together help us to live the best life that we can.”
