GEORGETOWN, Ky. — It’s a familiar sound heard this time of year at the AMEN House in Georgetown.
Volunteers here are busy filling carts with all the fixings to make a Thanksgiving meal a reality for those in Scott County in need of a holiday meal.
"Our Thanksgiving program is a way that we try to help the people at Thanksgiving time that probably aren't going to be able to put a Thanksgiving meal on the table," said Steven Budde, AMEN House chief operating officer.
Hundreds of bags are filled with all the traditional Thanksgiving favorites. Each is assembled and ready to go to anyone in need across Scott County.
"We have an amazing group of volunteers that pulls all of this together, and honestly, we couldn't do that without them or the community wrapping around us," said Michele Carlisle, AMEN House executive director.
These meals would not be possible without the generosity of so many throughout the community.
"We live in a beautiful community where hunger was a way of hiding; feeding," Carlisle said. "America tells us that we've got about 7,000 individuals within our community that fight food insecurity. And every day, not just on Thanksgiving, we have food available here at the AMEN House for them."
Budde said last year, the group estimates it served about 1,100 families over the Thanksgiving period.
"We're probably going to top 1,300, so the need is continuing to grow," Budde said. "We are probably averaging maybe a hundred new families that are registering with us each month."
"We know this food makes a difference," Carlisle added. "It's why we come in every day and work so hard to make sure that it's here."
Hard work from those at the AMEN House will keep everyone in Scott County from going hungry this Thanksgiving and beyond.
There is still time to sign up to get a Thanksgiving meal. To find out more, go to amenhouse.org. Meals are available to Scott County residents only with proof of residency.
