LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A suspect is charged with shooting two Louisville police officers Tuesday night.
A police report is giving a clearer picture of what happened on Roselane Street in Louisville’s Smoketown neighborhood.
At a news conference Tuesday, Louisville Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Col. Emily McKinley said the officers made a stop on a stolen car that had several people inside. When police stopped the car, a struggle over a weapon took placed between the officers and a one person in the car.
“During this struggle, two officers sustained gunshot wounds, and the suspect also sustained gunshot wounds,” McKinley said.
The suspect, 19-year-old Jeremiah Thompson, is facing several charges. They include first and second degree assault of a police officer, wanton endangerment, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest.
The police report says the officers were sent to Roselane Street to investigate a stolen car with a broken window. The officers found Thompson standing by a 2018 Kia Soul which was reported stolen Monday, Nov. 18. After confirming the car was stolen, the citation said Thompson admitted to the officers he drove the car. According to the report, the unidentified officers tried to arrest Thompson, and he began resisting arrest.
The arrest citation said officers put Thompson face down on the ground with his hands underneath his body. Thompson allegedly refused to give officers his hands. The report said when LMPD tried to control Thompson’s hands; he fired his gun. The bullet hit Thompson in his body and his arm. It also struck one officer in the hand and the other officer in his leg. A third officer wasn’t hurt.
McKinley said in the news conference, both officers were taken to UofL Hospital and Thompson was taken to Jewish Hospital.
The officer who was injured in the hand is scheduled to have surgery.
Mayor Craig Greenberg, D-Louisville, said both officers are in “good spirits and on the road to recovery.”
McKinley mentioned there were other suspects, but the police report doesn’t say anyone else was involved in the incident.
LMPD said its public integrity unit would continue the investigation and the department would share new information Wednesday. The police update is scheduled to happen at 2 p.m.
