In 2024, 11 University of Louisville baseball alumni spent time on Major League Baseball rosters. According to UofL, 43 former Cardinals were assigned to professional teams at the end of the year.
Davis was the No. 1 overall pick in 2021 and made his MLB debut on June 19, 2023. Davis has played in 99 games in the past two seasons and hit 13 doubles and eight home runs, including two homers against Shohei Ohtani in July 2023. He was with UofL from 2019 until 2021.
Fitzgerald was a fourth-round pick in 2019 by the San Francisco Giants. He made it to the big leagues on Sept. 21, 2023. His rookie season in 2024 was memorable as he hit .280 and had 15 home runs in 96 games. In July, he tied the MLB rookie record with a home run in five consecutive games, making him the first Giant, since Barry Bonds to accomplish the feat. Fitzgerald was at UofL in 2017-2019.
Louisville baseball has hosted the Leadoff Dinner since 1996 and some of the sports’ biggest names have appeared at the event. Previous guests included Andy Pettitte, Joe Girardi, Derek Jeter and Don Mattingly. There have also been plenty of UofL alums to come back and they include Chris Dominguez, Nick Burdi and Brendan McKay.
