LEXINGTON, Ky. — A Lexington high school is giving students a taste of democracy.
Showing a valid form of identification — in this case, a student's ID — is required at Tates Creek High School for its mock presidential election, where students will cast their ballot for former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris.
The school's media center is a temporary polling station. Jennifer Eldridge, the school’s longtime library and media specialist, is working with the school's social studies department to host the mock election and said they're taking a realistic approach to make students aware and well-equipped on how to cast their vote in future elections.
She added this is the school's second mock election since 2016.
“We talk about quality of information and getting the correct facts and being able to think for yourself and make good decisions,” Eldridge said.
Students like Alexis Bazzell said this is something that helps them understand the privilege that comes with voting.
“I think it's like a good opportunity for students of this group, that we can just kind of see how voting is when you turn 18 and can vote in these elections, especially presidential elections because those are the biggest ones," Bazzell said.
Kelly Bales, AP Government teacher, said the focus is on the "why," especially more during presidential elections.
“We do the history of the Electoral College, but I also find in my upper class, my seniors get interested in it because they don't know a whole lot about the candidates and they're fortunate to participate in a mock election in our school," Bales said.
She also shared several of her students will have the chance to vote in this year’s election.
Eldridge said this is just the beginning for her students and future voters. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
