The money comes the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, which is funded by the state.

A 16-year firefighting veteran, Lucas Tinsley, who will soon be fire chief of the Glasgow Fire Department, said this grant will help him and his crew start off on the right foot.

“We applied through the (Federal Emergency Management Agency), and it was pretty promising that we would have a good opportunity receiving this grant," Tinsley said.

With the grant, they will be buying more than 30 new air tanks, which Tinsley said are vital to firefighters' safety.

“This is where all the air is stored; 4,500 pounds of pressure inside of this," Tinsley said. "It is normal breathing air that we’re breathing right now.”

The firefighters will also be getting new masks to better supply the air from the tanks during smoky situations.

"This is what supplies good air to your mask inside an atmosphere that can be very toxic to your respiratory system," Tinsley said.

The new tanks will also be equipped with a gauge to make sure they have plenty of air.

“It gives you an indication ... how much air you have left," Tinsley said. "There are also audible alarms, if a firefighter were to get into trouble.”

Each tank will cost several thousand dollars. Equipment is coming from MSA, Scott and Drager.
